Voices of The Nutcracker

For the last three years, the Sunshine Coast has been home to two unique productions of The Nutcracker ballet. In 2023, Waldorf Ballet produced six performances at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt, and the Sunshine Coast Youth Dance Association staged eight performances at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons.

In this audio featurette, dancers and instructors from both productions reflect on the Nutcracker's magic, and the legacy of their involvement.

Thanks to dancers Sophie Cimbala, Annah Kotai, Gracelyn Mailey, Waverlee Meisinger (from Waldorf Ballet), Darrow Purjue, Anabelle Topcu Doering, Isabella Watts, Nolan Fahey, Annika Bergman, Peyton Gray, Eibhlin Minatsis, Makenzi Harris, Peter Reznick, Connor Dixon, Nevaeh Power (from the Sunshine Coast Youth Dance Association) as well as instructors Johanna Waldorf (Waldorf Ballet), Zoe Barbaro and Dominique Hutchinson (Sunshine Coast Youth Dance Association).

Pender Harbour Choir's 50th Anniversary

The Pender Harbour Choir (affiliated with the Pender Harbour Music Society) marked its 50th anniversary in 2023. The 22-voice ensemble performed “Midwinter Song,” a bracing blend of holiday arrangements under the direction of Kenneth Johnson, on December 8 and 9. The first of the concerts was held at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden, whose grounds are festooned in iridescent (and sometimes whimsical) seasonal finery.

In this live recording from the December 8 concert, the choir sings Cantate Canon.

Readings from the Coastal Voices anthology

This post presents readings by a selection of contributors to the 13th edition of the Coastal Voices anthology. The annual publication is a joint initiative of the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts and School District 46.

These recordings by authors and poets were made on the grounds of Sechelt's Rockwood Pavilion. The murmur of other writers, arriving for the release of the anthology, and the occasional roar of passing aircraft (notably during Flora's reading), provide aural texture to powerful words.
